The western Carpathians mountain range extends to the Tokajsko-Slańsk mountain and the southern part is the Zemplén mountain. The highest peak of the region is
Magas-Hegy (514 metres a.s.l.).
At the foot of the Zemplén mountain is Satoraljaújhely, the town with a long history dating back to the middle ages, now a popular winter sports and tourism
resort.
In this region of Hungary are the world famous Tokay wines produced and well known festivals take place.
The Zemplén Folk Dance group was founded in 1999 in Satoraljaújhely. The group’s main purpose is the protection of regional traditions. The ensemble has performed
at prestigious folk festivals gaining public recognition and high marks from judges. The group presents dances from the whole region of Zemplén and Carpathian
mountains. On the basis of the traditions of the highlanders of Zemplén the group has prepared a very diverse program. On the stage we will see girls’ games and
plays from Bodrogköz. Another funny looking sight is when young men with hands and feet bound dance and also typical for the region a dance called, “Verbuňk”.
There will also be gypsy dances. For the end of the program there will be traditional folk dances from the early twentieth century. The dancers will be accompanied
by instrumentalists, who use an extensive collection of more complex instruments.
