Just one hundred kilometres from the highest peak of Ukraine, that is 2,061 metres a.s.l. Howerli, is the city of Ultima, sometimes called the Gate of Pokucia and Huculszczyzna.
Since the 1980s there has been the PRYKARPATTIA Song and Dance Ensemble, which deals with the discovery, protection and promotion of the folklore of the Ukrainian region of Prykarpattia. This is not an easy task given the difficult political history and the large ethnic diversity of the area. Penitents and Hutsul are the areas once inhabited by Ukrainians, Łemkos, Huculas, Boykos, Poles, Jews and other ethnic groups. At present administrative divisions do not always coincide with old linguistic or ethnic divisions. Love for local traditions and folklore is what allows independently of the divisions to build a sense of self identity and regional belonging. The result of the work of the team members are colourful performances based on the richness of the musical and dance traditions of the previously mentioned ethnic groups. On the Zakopane stage we will see richly decorated Łemkos and Hutsul costumes, dances inspired by wedding ceremonies and we will hear tunes derived from the healing rites.
