Tajwan ”Yuan Yuan”
Portuguese sailors called this place Formosa, or “beautiful island.” Today, located in the Pacific ocean, between China and the Philippines , the island is called Taiwan and in Europe is known primarily as the home of computer hardware manufacturers. Taiwan is a mountainous island, uplands and mountain areas occupy about two thirds of its surface.
Approximately thirty peaks reach a height of almost 3,000 metres and the highest mountain, Yu Shan is 3,997 metres a.s.l. From this exotic place haunted by typhoons, Taiwan Fei Horng Goan and Dragon Dance Troupe will arrive. As the name implies, the artists deal with traditional dragon and lion dances. These are world famous, extremely spectacular traditional Chinese dances. They take the form of joyful street spectacles with participation of dancers hidden in costumes of dragon and lions. The dancers are accompanied by loud accompaniment with the dominant sound of the drums. The dragon dance is associated with rituals to provide rain and good yields. The lion dance is a folk tale of a lion who is convinced by a clever monkey to become a defender of a village. Taiwanese dancers have achieved mastery of playing lions and dragons and have acquired recognition for their craft in China
and international competitions.
