Bistritsa was set up in 1949 and took its name from the village where its members live. It is situated in the region of Szopłuk, 15 kilometres from the capital of Sofia, near mount Vitosha, with the highest peak, Cherni Vrah (2,290m. a.s.l.).
From the beginning the group focused on presenting the unique traditions of the Bulgarian white singing.
Over the years it has won awards in folk festivals in Europe and the world. Also, it has been appreciated by foreign TV stations, who have made films about them including: BBC and Japanese National Television. 

lso, UNESCO (tittle: “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”) for part of the group of elderly women acting as “Bistritsa Babi”, singing archaic white songs from the region of Szopłuk. The vocal and dance group accompanied by the orchestra who plays traditional instruments, such as bagpipes, rebec and six stringed instrument of the cither type, flute and accordion.
In the Zakopane festival the Bistritsa folk group will present songs accompanied by the spring ritual transition of girls from childhood to the age of a woman and the wedding customs of Bistritsa.
